If you have an eye problem you should always phone a community optometry practice (opticians) as your first port of call, and not another healthcare provider such as your GP practice. Please do not turn up at the optometry practice without having phoned ahead.
You will be triaged by an optometrist who will ensure you receive the most appropriate treatment for your eye problem. In some cases this may include being referred to an ophthalmologist in the hospital eye service if clinically appropriate.
If the optometry practice is closed and you're concerned about your vision, phone NHS 24 free on 111.
Free NHS-funded eye examinations are available in Scotland to all UK residents, refugees, asylum seekers and some eligible overseas visitors. This includes appointments to help you with eye infections and concerns about your eyes or vision.
You can search for optometry practices in your area on NHS Inform.
